Dominant le terrain de football, ce petit fort peu connu est une annexe de la citadelle. Erigé entre 1850 et 1853, sur une colline située au nord-ouest de la ville, il occupait une position stratégique très importante. Ses bastions casematés interdiront à l'ennemi, durant le siège de 1870-1871,toute approche de la place. Le camp retranché, aménagé à ses pieds, avait donné asile à un millier d'hommes pendant 9 mois.
Le fort est accessible au public lors d'animations (journées du patrimoine, etc.).
