Fondée par Stanislas au XVIIIe siècle, le bâtiment actuel est construit entre 1770 et 1778. Les superbes boiseries XVIIIe de la salle de lecture proviennent de l'ancienne université des Jésuites de Pont-à-Mousson.
La Bibliothèque Stanislas fait partie du réseau des Bibliothèques de Nancy aux côtés de la Médiathèque Manufacture, de la Médiathèque Haut-du-Lièvre et de la Mairie-Médiathèque saint-Pierre. Une de ses missions principales est la collecte, la valorisation et la conservation des documents lorrains.
