Fundado por Stanislas en el siglo XVIII, el edificio actual fue construido entre 1770 y 1778. La magnífica carpintería del siglo XVIII de la sala de lectura procede de la antigua universidad jesuita de Pont-à-Mousson
La Biblioteca Stanislas forma parte de la red de bibliotecas de Nancy, junto con la Mediateca Manufacture, la Mediateca Haut-du-Lièvre y la Mairie-Médiathèque saint-Pierre. Una de sus principales misiones es la recopilación, promoción y conservación de los documentos de Lorena.
