Palavas-les-Flots s’étend sur 847,5 hectares dont environ 75 % sont couverts par les étangs littoraux qui constituent un remarquable chapelet de grandes et riches lagunes communiquant entre elles.
Aujourd’hui, l’ensemble des étangs palavasiens est reconnu et protégé, classé en zone Natura 2000 (habitats naturels et espèces animales et végétales d’intérêt communautaire), labellisé Ramsar (zone humide d’importance internationale).
