Palavas-les-Flots se extiende sobre 847,5 hectáreas, de las cuales aproximadamente el 75% están cubiertas por estanques costeros que constituyen una notable cadena de grandes y ricas lagunas comunicadas entre sí
Hoy en día, el conjunto de los estanques palavinos está reconocido y protegido, clasificado como zona Natura 2000 (hábitats naturales y especies animales y vegetales de interés comunitario), y dotado de la etiqueta Ramsar (humedales de importancia internacional).
