Le Labourd est un ancien fief féodal rattaché d’abord à la Navarre puis à la Gascogne sous le nom de vicomté de Labourd et enfin à l'Aquitaine. Le territoire disparut lors de la révolution française avec la création du département des Pyrénées-Atlantiques.Selon l'Académie de la langue basque, le Labourd est un des sept territoires basques traditionnels nommés en 1643 par l'écrivain Axular dans l'avant-propos de son livre « Gero »,, avec la Soule, la Basse-Navarre, la Navarre, la Biscaye, l'Alava et le Guipuscoa.
