La Gaule aquitaine est une des trois provinces romaines créées par Auguste en 27 av. J.-C. Le territoire de l'Aquitaine protohistorique, limité au triangle Pyrénées – Atlantique – Garonne, facilement conquis par Publius Crassus, lieutenant de Jules César, en 55 av. J.-C., est ainsi augmenté d’une partie de la Gaule celtique, jusqu’à la Loire.
