Les croix de fer sont alignées dans un décor naturel, à l'orée de la forêt. C'est un lieu paisible où reposent 4 754 soldats allemands. La plupart sont enterrés dans les 2 ossuaires autour de la stèle (regroupement des corps exhumés de cimetières ou carrés militaires de 51 communes aux alentours). Le cimetière a été créé en 1893 par l’armée allemande pour l’inhumation des soldats du front. Une partie est un cimetière civil contenant une trentaine de tombes de citoyens allemands morts durant l'annexion de l'Alsace-Moselle.
