Le château de Fenouillet est le seul du département ayant servi de refuge aux hérétiques lors de la croisade contre les Albigeois. Après le traité de Corbeil-Barcelone en 1258, il n'est pas transformé en forteresse royale, comme les autres châteaux dits "cathares". On découvre donc ici, les ruines du château féodal.
