L'Histoire de la pittoresque chapelle Bonne Fontaine de Hoste débute en 1799, quand une apparition mariale se produit près d'une source, devant un enfant sourd muet, qui guérit. D'autres récits de guérison apparaissent rapidement et des pèlerinages importants sont organisés, dans un contexte de Révolution française qui n'apprécie guère ces mouvements de foule. En 1848, un calvaire est mis en place, puis la source est aménagée. Enfin, à l'aube de la Première Guerre Mondiale, la chapelle est érigée pour recevoir la ferveur religieuse suscitée par ce lieu pétri tant de croyance que de légendes.
