Le seigneur de Mauzé "fait trancher des terres" en 1315 pour créer un port. En 1714, l’ingénieur du roi Claude Masse visite le port de Chaban et de Mauzé qui est menacé de ruine. Un projet de canal est examiné en 1808 par Napoléon 1er. De 1843 à 45, le canal du Mignon est aménagé de l’écluse de Bazoin jusqu’au port de Gueux (près de Sazay), puis prolongé de 1880 à 83 jusqu’à Mauzé pour relier la commune à la mer par la Sèvre Niortaise et permettre le transport par gabare de marchandises. Rapidement concurrencé par le rail, puis la route, le plus grand port de la Venise Verte est bientôt abandonné. En 1996, il est réhabilité dans le cadre des Grands Travaux du Marais poitevin, mais demeure inaccessible aux bateaux puisque le canal est actuellement navigable de Bazoin jusqu’à un peu en amont de La Grève-s.-le-Mignon.
