En 1954, l'abbé Lucien Oziol (1920-2004), vicaire à Marvejols, spécialisé dans les œuvres de l'enfance, assiste à un congrès à Clermont sur les enfants handicapés. Il décide alors de se lancer dans l'aventure et de créer le premier centre d'accueil pour personnes handicapées. Il achète la propriété du Clos du Nid, située près de Marvejols, et y aménage la grange et l'écurie en locaux d'accueil.
Le succès du Clos du Nid est très rapide, et de nombreux autres centres se créent dans les environs, et même dans d'autres départements, comme dans l'Oise, ainsi que la Loire et l'Hérault.
En 1970, le Clos du Nid totalisait 600 employés, au service de 700 handicapés.
