Grand Soldat, hameau d'Abreschviller s'appelait originellement Soldatenthal, nom qui signifie « vallée du Soldat » ou « des Soldats ». Ce nom viendrait d'une statue de Mercure ou de Mars trouvée là. Grand-Soldat constitue l'aboutissement du chemin de fer, ancien réseau d'exploitation forestière reconverti en ligne touristique. Au cours de la visite, on peut visiter une scierie à haut-fer. Grand Soldat est le lieu de naissance d’Alexandre Chatrian, hommes de lettres (1826-1890). Sa maison natale se trouve au N° 7 (plaque au dessus de la porte). Il est plus connu sous le nom de plume commun d’« Erckmann-Chatrian » qu’il partage avec son ami Émile Erckmann.
