Grand Soldat, hamlet of Abreschviller was originally called Soldatenthal, a name meaning "Soldier's Valley" or "Soldiers' Valley". This name would come from a statue of Mercury or Mars found there. Grand-Soldat is the culmination of the railway, a former logging network converted into a tourist line. During the visit, you can visit a sawmill with high iron. Grand Soldat is the birthplace of Alexandre Chatrian, men of letters (1826-1890). His birth house is located at N° 7 (plaque above the door). He is better known under the common pen name of "Erckmann-Chatrian" which he shares with his friend Émile Erckmann.
