Holme Lacy ne provient pas de l'ancien norrois holmr "île" comme d'autres lieux portant le nom de Holme, mais de l'ancien anglais hamm "terre dans un coude de rivière". Le nom a été enregistré comme Hamme dans le Domesday Book en 1086.
