En 1940, Turing fit convertir ses économies en argent et les enterra dans un bois, craignant une invasion allemande. L'emplacement exact de ce bois reste cependant incertain. Cette année-là, il acheta deux gros lingots d'argent (environ 90 kg au total) et les enterra dans un petit bois près de Bletchley Park afin de protéger ses économies en cas d'invasion de la Grande-Bretagne par l'Allemagne. Il créa des instructions codées pour retrouver l'emplacement, mais ne parvint jamais à récupérer les lingots après la guerre, malgré plusieurs tentatives avec un détecteur de métaux. Les sources font invariablement référence à des « bois près de Bletchley Park » ou à un « petit bois à proximité ».
