Le château de Southsea fait partie des fortifications d'artillerie d'Henri VIII qu'on appelait aussi « Châteaux Henriciens ». Il fut construit en 1543 sur le front de mer à l'extrémité sud de l'île de Portsea . Ce château fut bâti pour surveiller l'entrée est menant au Solent et celle conduisant au port de Portsmouth. C'est tout près de cet endroit qu'Henri VIII regarda couler la Mary Rose en 1545.
