La rivière prend naissance dans une région au nord du Mur d'Hadrien, composée des couches rocheuses typiques de la Northumbrie, à savoir le calcaire, le grès, l'ardoise et le charbon, et traversée par de nombreux petits ruisseaux, dont la plupart n'ont pas de nom. Le Caw Burn et le Pont Gallon Burn sont les deux rivières sources les plus longues et clairement identifiables du Haltwhistle Burn.
