La gare de Wigan Central était située sur Station Road, à quelque distance des deux principales gares qui se trouvent à l'extrémité ouest du centre-ville.
Wigan Central était l'aboutissement final des Wigan Junction Railways venant de Glazebrook West Junction. Elle a été construite par le Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway et a ouvert le 3 octobre 1892, remplaçant le terminus temporaire de Wigan Darlington Street, qui avait ouvert le 1er avril 1884. Central était située à environ 1⁄3 de mile plus près du centre-ville que Darlington Street.
