Le monastère de Daphné est construit sur un site qui est sacré depuis les temps anciens. Ici se trouvait un temple d'Apollon. Le nom Daphné (qui signifie laurier) fait référence à Apollon. Le temple a été détruit vers 395 car il a été interdit par l'empereur chrétien. Vous pouvez encore voir une colonne survivante du temple près de l'entrée du monastère.
Ici aussi, Lord Elgin, qui a pris de nombreux reliques de l'Acropole, a emporté quelques reliques du temple d'Apollon en Angleterre.
