La ville d'Athènes et l'Acropole subirent trois sièges au cours de la guerre d'indépendance : le premier et le second opposèrent la population musulmane retranchée dans la forteresse aux Grecs insurgés ; le troisième opposa une garnison et une partie de la population civile grecques et quelques philhellènes à une armée ottomane commandée par Mehmet Rechid Pacha.
