La rue est nommée d'après l'église de Saint-Thomas, fondée en 1175 près de l'église de Sainte-Catherine. Le fondateur était William FitzAldelm, député et parent du roi Henri II. L'église était dédiée à Thomas Becket, qui avait récemment été assassiné dans sa cathédrale à Canterbury par les partisans du roi. L'église est devenue un monastère riche et puissant, qui contrôlait la Liberté de Thomas Court et Donore. En 1539, elle a été dissoute avec tous les monastères par Henri VIII. Au cours des 150 années suivantes, les églises du voisinage sont passées à l'église réformée, tandis que des prêtres catholiques romains menaient une existence précaire en s'occupant de la majeure partie de la population, qui restait fidèle à l'ancienne religion.
