De straat is genoemd naar de kerk van St. Thomas, opgericht in 1175 nabij de St. Catharinakerk. De oprichter was William FitzAldelm, plaatsvervanger en verwant van koning Hendrik II. De kerk was gewijd aan Thomas Becket, die kort daarvoor in zijn kathedraal in Canterbury was vermoord door volgelingen van de koning. De kerk werd een rijk en machtig klooster, dat de vrijheid van Thomas Court en Donore controleerde. In 1539 werd het samen met alle kloosters ontbonden door Hendrik VIII. In de daaropvolgende 150 jaar gingen de kerken in de omgeving over naar de gereformeerde kerk, terwijl rooms-katholieke priesters een precair bestaan leidden door de grotere meerderheid van de bevolking te bedienen, die trouw bleef aan de oude religie.
