La strada è intitolata alla chiesa di San Tommaso, fondata nel 1175 vicino alla chiesa di Santa Caterina. Il fondatore era William FitzAldelm, vice e parente del re Enrico II. La chiesa era dedicata a Tommaso Becket, che era stato recentemente assassinato nella sua cattedrale a Canterbury dai seguaci del re. La chiesa divenne un monastero ricco e potente, che controllava la Libertà di Thomas Court e Donore. Nel 1539 fu dissolta insieme a tutti i monasteri da Enrico VIII. Nei successivi 150 anni le chiese del quartiere passarono alla chiesa riformata, mentre i sacerdoti cattolici romani conducevano un'esistenza precaria assistendo la parte più grande della popolazione, che rimase fedele alla vecchia religione.
