L'île d'Achill dans le comté de Mayo est la plus grande île d’Irlande. Elle est située au large de la côte ouest. Sa population est de 2 700 habitants. Achill est rattachée à la terre par le pont Michael-Davitt, entre les villages d’Achill Sound et de Polranny. C’est un pont tournant qui permet le passage de petits bateaux. Le pont a été construit en 1886 et remplacé par la structure actuelle après la Seconde Guerre mondiale.
