La migration a eu et a un énorme impact en Irlande. Cela est rappelé par ce petit pont en pierre qui est connu localement sous le nom de Droichead na nDeor, ou le pont des larmes. Les émigrants en route vers Derry, où ils embarquaient pour le Nouveau Monde, disaient au revoir sur ce pont. Le pont a inspiré Willam Percy French pour le poème "An Irish Mother" et le groupe folk Clannad pour leur émouvant "The Bridge of Tears".
On parle aussi d'un 'American wake'. Lors de cet American wake, on faisait ses adieux à un membre de la famille qui s'apprêtait à émigrer vers l'Amérique, le Canada, l'Australie ou ailleurs. C'était dans de nombreux cas la dernière fois que les membres de la famille se verraient en personne. Les émigrants assistent, pour ainsi dire, à leurs propres funérailles.
