Migrationen har og har haft en enorme indvirkning i Irland. Det minder denne lille stenbro om, der lokalt er kendt som Droichead na nDeor, eller tårernes bro. Emigranter på vej til Derry, hvor de gik om bord til den nye verden, tog afsked på denne bro. Broen inspirerede Willam Percy French til digtet "An Irish Mother" og folkemusikgruppen Clannad til deres rørende "The Bridge of Tears".
Folk taler også om en 'amerikansk vågen.' Under den amerikanske vågen sagde man farvel til et familiemedlem, der skulle udvandre til Amerika, Canada, Australien eller andetsteds. Det var i mange tilfælde sidste gang, at familiemedlemmer ville se hinanden i live. Emigranterne deltog i deres egen begravelse, så at sige.
