Migratie hatte und hat einen enormen Einfluss in Irland. Daran erinnert diese kleine Steinbrücke, die lokal als Droichead na nDeor bekannt ist, oder die Brücke der Tränen. Emigranten auf dem Weg nach Derry, wo sie in die Neue Welt einschifften, nahmen an dieser Brücke Abschied. Die Brücke inspirierte Willam Percy French zu dem Gedicht "An Irish Mother" und die Folkgruppe Clannad zu ihrem bewegenden "The Bridge of Tears".
Man spricht auch von einem 'American Wake'. Während dieses American Wake nahm man Abschied von einem Familienmitglied, das in die Vereinigten Staaten, nach Kanada, Australien oder anderswo auswandern würde. Es war in vielen Fällen das letzte Mal, dass sich Familienmitglieder lebend begegnen würden. Die Emigranten nahmen, sozusagen, an ihrer eigenen Beerdigung teil.
