La ville est connue pour sa mozzarella et pour ses liens avec le crime organisé, notamment pour être le fief du clan des Casalesi, qui tirent son nom de la commune.
La commune, ainsi que le village voisin de San Cipriano d'Aversa, est tristement célèbre pour être un des haut-lieux de la camorra de la province de Caserte.
