Le nom de la commune est lié à une autre localité, Gioiosa Guardia , qui se trouvait sur le mont Meliuso et qui a été abandonnée à la suite du tremblement de terre de 1783 et de la famine qui s'ensuivit. Les habitants ont ainsi fondé un nouveau centre sur la côte et l'ont appelé Gioiosa Marea pour le différencier de l'ancien.
