Maratea est une commune italienne d'environ 4 980 habitants, située dans la province de Potenza, dans la région Basilicate, en Italie méridionale.
Selon l'explication la plus accréditée, formulée par Giacomo Racioppi, le nom de Maratea descend du grec marathus, c'est-à-dire fenouil sauvage. Le nom de la ville signifierait « terre du fenouil sauvage ».
