Il s'agit du principal temple du souverain céleste du panthéon romain, Jupiter. Il est situé sur le sommet du Mons Capitolium, ou Capitole, colline au pied de laquelle, selon les récits de fondation de la ville, Romulus décida de bâtir Rome après avoir proclamé que cette hauteur serait lieu d'asylum pour tous les volontaires du Latium qui souhaiteraient participer à la fondation de la cité.
