Les catacombes de Rome sont les lieux de sépultures souterraines dans lesquelles les chrétiens de Rome, notamment, enterraient leurs morts lors des premiers siècles de l'Église primitive.
Le nom original de ces lieux était cœmeteria . Le terme « catacombe » vient du latin ad catacombus, c'est-à-dire « près de la carrière », car une des premières catacombes, la catacombe de Saint-Sébastien, était dans une ancienne carrière. Mais ce n'est qu'à partir de Xe siècle que l'expression devint un nom générique pour ce genre de cimetière chrétien souterrain.
