L' Ordre de Montevergine est un ordre monastique masculin de droit pontifical fondé en 1126 et qui observait la règle de Saint Benoît. L'institut fusionne en 1879 avec la congrégation de Subiaco.
En 1118, Guillaume de Verceil décide de vivre en ermite sur le sommet de Montevergine ; il attire un certain nombre de disciples, y compris des prêtres, qui construisent des cellules et participent en 1124 à la construction d'une église dédiée à la Vierge qui est consacrée la même année par l'évêque Jean I d'Avellino. L'abbaye de Montevergine est fondée en 1126. En 1127, Guillaume quitte sa fondation avec cinq ermites et s'installe sur le Laceno où il est rejoint par Jean de Matera. Ce dernier se retire ensuite au Gargano en fondant un monastère et Guillaume continue d'établir des communautés d'abord sur Monte Cognato, puis au Goleto où il meurt en 1142.
