Les travaux du Delta sont un système de défense contre les inondations maritimes pour les provinces de Zélande et du sud de la Hollande-Méridionale. Ces gigantesques ouvrages ont été déclenchés par la catastrophe de 1953 au cours de laquelle près de 1800 personnes ont perdu la vie en Zélande.
