Le palais royal actuel était l'ancienne mairie d'Amsterdam. Il a été construit entre 1648 et 1665.
Napoléon a transformé la mairie en palais en 1808. Au 20e siècle, le bâtiment a été restauré et a retrouvé son état d'origine. Le balcon que le roi avait fait construire a été enlevé. En 1960, le bâtiment a été partiellement ouvert au public.
