Het huidige koninklijk Paleis was het vroegere stadhuis van Amsterdam. Het werd tussen 1648 en 1665 gebouwd.

Napoleon veranderde het stadhuis in een paleis in 1808. In de 20e eeuw werd het gebouw tijdens een restauratie weer in zijn originele staat terug gebracht. Het balkon dat de koning had laten bouwen werd weggehaald. In 1960 is het gebouw gedeeltelijk opengesteld voor publiek.
