En juin 2006, le tableau "Repas des archers en célébration de la paix de Münster" a été endommagé par du vandalisme. Cette œuvre de Bartholomeus van der Helst a été arrosée d'un acide corrosif par un ancien Allemand bien connu du Rijksmuseum. Hans-Joachim B. de Hambourg, alors âgé de 69 ans, avait déjà détruit un grand nombre de tableaux en Allemagne. Il avait également purgé une peine de prison jusqu'en 2005. Il souffrait de troubles obsessionnels et de troubles anxieux. Il était déjà devenu inapte au travail à cause d'une opération cérébrale antérieure. Bien que sa photo soit à l'entrée, il a pu s'introduire furtivement pendant la pression des expositions.
Le repas des archers, d'une superficie de plus de 10 mètres carrés, est l'œuvre la plus importante du maître du XVIIe siècle Bartholomeus van der Helst. Il représente la guilde de Saint-Georges d'Amsterdam célébrant la fin de la guerre de Quatre-Vingts Ans avec un repas de paix.
