Bolsward est une ville de la province de Friesland. Elle compte 10 120 habitants. Depuis le 1er janvier 2011, Bolsward fait partie de la nouvelle commune de Súdwest-Fryslân. Bolsward s'est développée sur une motte tripartite. La partie la plus ancienne se trouve là où se dresse l'église Saint-Martin. L'église des Frères, qui a été détruite par un incendie en 1980 et qui est restée en ruines, est le plus ancien bâtiment de la ville et date en partie de la fin du XIIIe siècle. L'image médiévale de la Vierge Marie, Us Leaffrou fan Sânwâlden, est actuellement conservée dans la basilique Saint-François au Dijlakker.
