L'enceinte autour de Muiden a été construite en 1577 et servait à la fermeture de la (ancienne) digue maritime et du canal de Naarden. De 1877 à 1879, la forteresse de Muiden a été modernisée, avec le célèbre Muiderslot, par son intégration dans la Défense d'Amsterdam.
