Heukelum est mentionné pour la première fois dans un document de 996. Il a obtenu des droits de ville après l'achèvement de l'enceinte en 1230.
En 1772, lors d'un grand incendie de la ville, 36 des environ 100 maisons en bois ont été perdues.
Le Château Merckenburg à Heukelum se trouve toujours à l'emplacement où se tenait déjà en 1230 un château du même nom.
Les anciennes murailles de la ville se trouvent sous les talus couverts de gazon autour de la ville, bordés par un fossé.
