Heukelum wird erstmals in einem Dokument aus dem Jahr 996 erwähnt. Es erhielt, nachdem die Umfassungsmauer 1230 fertiggestellt wurde, das Stadtrecht.
Im Jahr 1772 gingen bei einem großen Stadtbrand 36 von etwa 100 Holzhäusern verloren.
Das Schloss Merckenburg in Heukelum steht noch immer an dem Ort, an dem bereits 1230 ein Schloss mit demselben Namen stand.
Die alten Stadtmauern liegen unter den mit Gras bewachsenen Böschungen rund um die Stadt, die von einem Graben umgeben sind.
