Heukelum nævnes første gang i et dokument fra 996. Det fik byrettigheder efter at ommuren var færdigbygget i 1230.
I 1772 gik 36 af de omkring 100 træhuse tabt ved en stor bybrand.
Slottet Merckenburg i Heukelum ligger stadig på det sted, hvor der allerede i 1230 stod et slot med samme navn.
De gamle bymure ligger under græsbeklædte skråninger rundt om byen, omkranset af en grav.
