La grande porte d'eau actuelle de Delfzijl, datant de 1833, se trouve sur la digue à l'extrémité de la Havenstraat. La porte d'eau est l'une des portes d'eau que compte Delfzijl, il y a aussi la Petite porte d'eau, qui est également appelée De Ruyterpoort.
La porte d'eau a été restaurée dans les années 1970 et est toujours utilisée comme coupure. Lors de grandes marées, la porte est fermée par une porte métallique. Du côté du port se trouve une pierre avec une inscription qui marque la marée de 1962.
