Une digue d'algues protégeait l'île de Wieringen contre la mer montante. Les pêcheurs récoltaient l'herbe marine (algue) en mer. Cette algue était également commercialisée comme rembourrage pour matelas et coussins. À De Hoelm, on peut bien voir comment la digue d'algues dépasse l'ancienne mer - désormais une province asséchée.
