Le grand pont ferroviaire au-dessus de la gare de Zwolle, conformément aux spécifications destiné aux piétons, aux petits chariots et au bétail, a été construit en 1883 et reliait la ville au Schelle qui était alors presque entièrement agricole.
Le design était de jhr. M.J. Schuurbecke Boeije, ingénieur à l'emploi des Chemins de fer d'État. Celui-ci a utilisé des poutres en treillis pour la travée, une construction développée par l'ingénieur allemand F.A. von Pauli vers 1855.
