Pendant la période de 1664 à 1806/1820, l'église Saint-Martin a été utilisée comme église simultanée par la paroisse catholique romaine Saint-Martin et la communauté réformée (luthérienne) de Geul. Elle était également le refuge pour les protestants qui habitaient de l'autre côté de la Meuse, dans le pays de Rekem.
