Avec la construction du barrage de Brielse Gat, une magnifique et unique zone de repos pour les oiseaux a été créée, avec des vasières (qui sont submergées à marée haute) et des prés salés (qui sont sous l'eau uniquement lors de très grandes marées). Les nombreux oiseaux dans cette zone se dirigent vers le sol riche en nutriments où vivent de nombreux petits animaux.
