La villa doit son nom au village de Sanoer à Bali. Les habitants ont sauvé le capitaine de Vries lorsqu'il a échoué là-bas. De Vries naviguait sur des navires marchands et a pu faire construire la villa avec l'argent gagné en 1906. De Vries était impressionné par la culture italienne et cette influence se retrouve dans le design de la maison, mais surtout dans le jardin. Plus tard, la maison a reçu un deuxième nom : 'De Burlenburgh'. Dérivé des cris du cerf mâle en rut. La maison est également l'une des maisons de l'association pour les membres masculins de l'Association des Étudiants de Wageningen 'Ceres'.
