Le 18 juillet 1622, le général espagnol Ambrogio Spinola met le siège devant la ville néerlandaise de Berg-op-Zoom. Les Espagnols doivent lever le siège le 2 octobre, en raison des constructions défensives récentes et de l'intervention du stathouder Maurice de Nassau, prince d'Orange.En 1588, le premier siège de Berg-op-Zoom, dirigé par Alexandre Farnèse, duc de Parme, s'était conclu par un échec espagnol grâce à l'arrivée de Maurice de Nassau. Le général espagnol Ambrogio Spinola arrive aux Pays-Bas en 1600. C'est lui qui dirigera la bataille.
